Welcome to Berwick Street Records

Timo Garcia - Wonderlust Bug The REMIXES

Timo Garcia - Berwick Street Records boss - commendably soldiers on in the fight for the limelight that is the nature of running an independent label with this, the release of his debut artist album Wonderlust Bug as remixed by a range of talents from a whole bag full of genres.

The original LP was a well-produced journey through techy, proggy house and drew on Timo's experiences of travelling the world. It also introduced the world to the Hang Drum (a sonorous, deep, bell-like instrument) and Manu Delago (a skilled player of said drum) and was as much for home as it was for club listening. This remix edition, though, is decidedly more dance floor orientated once Timo’s album opening, sun kissed reinterpretation of The Hang Drum track has blissfully floated by having dumped you in Balearic heaven. After that comes a peak time, pumping ‘Wonderlust [Free Your Mind]’ re-rub by Shifter & Carvell which ebbs and flows from spiralling synth breakdowns to driving, tech edged house, all with an ethereal vocal from Amber Jolene floating up top. Also included is a retro slice of house courtesy of NYC’s DJ Onionz who turns ‘Boom’ into a percolating track which builds and builds with twisted synths until it bubbles over into a deep, spacey jaunt; a spare, trippy 4/4 cut ‘Wonderlust’ from James Harcourt which is as much for head as it is heel and even a slice of piano led deebee from Jenkinsound who take the swing theme of ‘Swing Thing’ and run it through a fuzzy, future filter, this time featuring Sam Obernik on vocals.

The second disc offers more straight up house with micro-funky and dainty melodies (Amber’s vocals on ‘Magic Roundabout’); swaggering, deep tech-house (‘Wonderlust’ (Justin Harris Singapore remix)); chunky, shuffling grooves in the form of ‘Swing Thing’ (Demarkus Lewis remix); prickling acid from DJ Pierre on ‘Boom;’ broken beats on ‘The Morning After ‘(Instrumental Beats mix) and what is arguably the highlight – a moody, salt shaker sprinkled slice of dark underground tech from the Jet Project’s Timmy Stuart.

All in all another solid release for Timo, and one which offers so much to so many: any DJs out there should add this to their want lists immediately – it’s full of killer tracks which could ignite many a varied dance floor.

AFTERLIFE
"I really like it, it has a feel of Jon Hassell in his African phase but really up to date. I really love the brass chords and the overall vibe is great." (The Hang Drum Track Balearica remix)

Stuart Patterson (on Deadly Grooves)
F#ckin ace mate.. best thing you've done for me.. all mixes killer, now just which one to play..

Data Transmission (Review of BOOM) 9/10
Akashic 11 finishes off with a 2-step garage mix with dubstep sounds, full of rude bass frequencies both razor-sharp and phatter in nature. The vocals and original sounds are cut up placed inventively, and combined with gnarly, tumultuous bass, make for by far the most interesting and musically enjoyable mix of the lot. Stick with this and the original and you’ll go far my son.

ourHOUSE Magazine review by Dean Facer 10/10
Following his superb debut album release back in May 2009 Timo Garcia enlists a truly inspired selection of DJ's to remix the album, and brings you, Wonderlust Bug - The Remixes. Coming out on his own highly regarded London based label Berwick Street Records, Tim Belcher aka Timo Garcia has selected 19 superb remixes of his own original material, and as mentioned he has enlisted some truly inspired choices of DJ's to do the remixes including DJ Pierre, Eric Kupper, Jon Gurd, Demarkus Lewis, Lützenkirchen etc. Personal favourites of mine are DJ Pierre's Afro Acid remix of 'Boom' which is a real gem of remix and takes you on a trip down memory lane with it's late 80's acid overtones and bringing back fond memories of the whole Acid House scene, then there is one of my favourite producers, Lützenkirchen, with his take on 'Magic Roundabout' which is six and half minutes of peaktime jackin' house that locks you into it's groove and takes you prisoner and then of course there is the ground breaking track 'The Hang Drum Track' that actually gets the remix treatment three times all in very different ways, but Timo's own 'Balearica Mix' is simply stunning and just ripe for watching the sunset in a bar in Ibiza or wherever else you choose to see the sun melt in to the ocean. Overall 10/10, 19 superb remixes of Timo's original works and a must have album for any serious DJ or music lover.

Data Transmission / Inhale review by Jan Milkulin 8/10
True to form, Timo has put together a double album of remixes that show just why he is such an in-demand DJ and producer… With luminaries such as Eric Kupper, DJ Pierre and Onionz queuing up for remix duty, this was always sure to pack a punch or two. The knock-out blows come from Kupper, Jon Gurd, Shifter & Carvell and Timo himself, who steps in occasionally to remix his own work and providing my favourite mix of the entire album – the Balearica remix of his storming single, ‘The Hang Drum Track’. Overall, this is a double album that intrigues, informs and inspires. A great collection of tracks and a well planned and compiled album with a good fell and flow too.

Resident Advisor NEWS Article
Timo Garcia is set to release a double-disc collection of remixes in early February. Real name Tim Belcher, the London-based DJ, producer and label owner certainly hasn't relied on any others in getting his name out there, founding his Berwick Street Records imprint in 2005 in order to showcase his tech-house productions. His hard work over the past five years culminated with last year's debut full-length, Wonderlust Bug, and Belcher is obviously keen to keep the momentum going with this 19-track compilation. Featuring remixes from Chicago house legend DJ Pierre as well as Lützenkirchen, Onionz, Timmy Stewart, James Harcourt and Belcher himself, Wonderlust Bug: The Remixes aims directly for the dance floor. If you didn't catch it last time around, the producer has made the original Wonderlust Bug album available as a free download via his Soundcloud page. Berwick Street Records will release Wonderlust Bug: The Remixes on February 8th, 2010.

iDJ Magazine review 8/10
Timo Garcia Wonderlust Bug: The Remixes Berwick Street (UK) Wherein label boss Timo flexes his contact muscles and ties 19 club-ready rubs of tracks from last year’s artist album in two handy discs. If you’ve been following Timo’s label Berwick St, you’ll kinda know what to expect; house music, and plenty of it! A few curveballs have also been included to keep things as varied and exciting as they need to be in these competitive times. Admittedly the collection works best for DJs but there’s more than enough variety to keep any dancefloor-reared ears happy... And even more production talent. My own personal highlights come courtesy of Justin Harris for his whimsically melodic take on ‘Wonderlust’, and Akashic, thanks to his deviously edgy dubsteppy angle on ‘Boom’, but these are just two in a collection that features names as big as DJ Pierre and Onionz and stretch as far as downtempo to D&B. Wonderlusts never cease...

Timo Garcia - Wonderlust Bug (Artist Album)

Under the alias Timo Garcia, he joins the dots of our planet’s clubbing hotspots. Rocking crowds across Brazil, at London’s Ministry of Sound, around Russia, at all of Ibiza’s sharpest clubs and more: he is a global DJ. Whether spinning his own razor edged house productions, or mixing the tech and electro of others, he weaves sets stuffed with sonics from all over.

But seeing and hearing the world in this way has uniquely improved the arsenal of sounds at his disposal as a DJ, and poignantly inform his productions. Be they glitched-out, guitar led or Hang Drum peppered, a Timo Garcia track is always on point.

As Tim Belcher, he heads his London born Berwick Street Records imprint, championing up-coming (D-Dub, Hauswerks, Le Crunch) and established artists (Lutzenkirtchen, Yousef & Smokin Jo) alike. Nurturing originality and hosting the work of musicians from all over the world, Berwick Street Records’ only aims are to output quality music, no matter the name of the genre, and host the best parties in town, whatever town that may be.

With one ear on the underground, and one experiencing dance music in the here and now, it’s no wonder Timo offers his debut album, Wonderlust Bug, as a window into his world: a document of his thoughts and travels laid out in sound. Each note of the album is influenced by a different nook of the world‘s most exciting DJ booths, and programmed by an experienced artist, all in the interests of electronica.

Says Timo, ‘I get to see a lot of places I wouldn’t otherwise get to being a DJ, and I am thankful for that. The album’s inspired by so many things, from buskers on the South Bank to acoustic bands playing on the beaches of Brazil. I felt the need to help spread the vibes of things like the Hang Drum into the dance music fraternity. I wanted to use and promote the sounds I hear around the world, as well as use some older ideas I’ve had for a while and been desperate to use somehow!

‘The title is a play on Wanderlust meaning to enjoy travel. I added the Bug as I’ve got it bad, and changed it to Wonder, as I like my mind to do the traveling sometimes. The album goes from deep house, to tougher tech, through a touch of swing and ends up on an ambient high – It’s kind of structured like a DJ set in terms of momentum until right at the end that is!’

Wonderlust Bug builds steadily from the off, with the shuffling 4/4 beats of ‘Boom’ gliding along, locking a solid groove and kicking in all the right places. ‘The Hang Drum Track’ introduces the unique talents of Manu Delago who’s sonorous drum/bell percussion instrument rings out in waves and creates an enchanting, trance like track. It’s almost as if house music were escaping from the heavens…

The tempo steps up on ‘Deadly Grooves’ which is dream material for a darkened disco goer: stuffed with stabs of electro and skewed synth to get the hands in the air, and a driving, pulsey bassline to keep the feet tapping. Elsewhere, ‘The Bug’ is all twisted tech and sine waves from the future, weaving dark and intricate sonic tapestries with a black funk undercurrent.

Wherever you look, Wonderlust Bug is filled with accomplished electronic outpourings from a solid British talent of which to be proud. And what’s more, it’s fair to say these tracks, and the others from Timo’s debut LP, will be pricking up learned ears, and twitching funky feet, for many months to come.

Enjoy…

Yousef
'The Morning After' is ace mate, you've done really well. Really nice.

Hector Romero
Hi Timo – Thanks for sending me your album – congrats on putting together a tight project together – sounds like you put a lot of time into it. The tracks didn’t have ID’s so it’s hard for me to tell you which one I liked best. Looking forward to receiving the project as individual tracks. Best of luck.

Giles Smith (secretsundaze)
I think its a solid album of dance trax

Osunlade
Delicious and refreshing! I love the overall feeling of the album, its spacious, deep intimate..deep and techy (magic roundabout sounds a bit dark sonically compared to the rest of the album) favourite track: 'The Bug', i love its bouncy effect.. keep the head moving!

Jody Wisternoff (Way Out West)
Some great stuff on your album mate. 'The Morning After' is beautiful.

Trisco / Wonderland Avenue
Great album mate...washes over you effortlessly.....'Boom' is probably my fave, lovely deep spacey groove, will work on any floor .... right up there with the final track which is beautiful - top vocal. Overall I'd give the album 9/10....should get this into all the loungy bars. Well done!

Jon Marsh (Beloved)
I like 'The Hang Drum Track' but my favourite is 'Magic Roundabout' - cool, squelchy, hypnotic, floaty etc etc - very me! I hope it does well for you & thanks for asking for my opinion. Mike Monday It sounds good - you've really nailed your sound which is great, and in the process of doing it you've obviously come a long way! I like the way you've put it together and you've obviously done it with a lot of care and skill. nice work!

Llorca
It's definitely a good electronic album - truth is, i'm not a fan of electronic albums in general. I find it difficult to stick to one hour of 4 to the floor beats, as a listener and as a composer, giving you the impression at the end you've been listening to one long static track. Fortunately, every track has its own atmosphere here, bringing the long-play some ups, downs and different mood. My favourite one is the bug. Simply because it's the most funky track of the whole album :-) Anyway, good luck with your album, mate. releasing an electronic album today is quite a thing, cheers ludO;

Neil Quigley (Urban....Torque Recordings)
Overall it's a very accomplished album, so many congratulations! My favourite track is the penultimate one, 'Release'. Just a great club track with memorable riffs and chord changes. I'm thinking the last track is 'Solaris' inspired? Regardless, a nice ending to the album.

Jim 'Shaft' Ryan
Very cool album, Had it on all afternoon mate. Favourite Songs are 'The Hang Drum Track' & 'The Morning After' Love the unique sound of Hang Drum. The Morning After a perfect way to finish a very interesting album.

Igor Marijuan (ibizasonica)
I have to tell you that is fantastic. I'm really into your style. I love "Deadly Grooves" and "Wonderlust" I have been playing those tracks in my gigs and the reaction was fantastic. I..m supporting your album on Ibiza Sonica radio too. All the best from Ibiza.

DJ Rebekah
I really like the variety of different tracks, there will be something for everyone on it, and i really like 'The Morning After' for listening.

Solomun (Diynamic)
'Lady Luck' is nice, beautiful atmo, and 'Swing Thing' .:) but my fav is 'The Morning After'. all the best, Mladen

Static Revenger
This is great! Timo manages to create one solid listening experience woven through a tapestry of different genres that one might not necessarily expect from one collection of music. Personal highlight for me is ‘Swing Thing’- Its so Daft and Cheeky- I LOVE IT! - Jazz, big band and swing are among my favourite styles of music, as is electronic, and this is a neat example of flipping the two genres- usually a producer goes for a jazz sample, and builds electronically around that, and Swing Thing builds Jazz from electronic in the inverse- more along the lines of the seminal electronic classical recordings by Tomita and Walter Carlos. NICE... thanks for the heads up on this and much luck with it.

DeMarkus Lewis
Very nice album!!! Quite the solid journey.. Reminds me of how a proper dj mix should sound the way it travels and the mood changes ever so slightly until it climaxes. Or even more like good sex ;) ‘Swing Thing’ is my fav here!! Because i'd like to remix it :P

Tyrrell
Right from the off, I liked what I was hearing - very listenable and with several tracks I'd like for my own DJ sets. Favourite song is 'The Hang Drum Track'. Reason - It's a bit proggy, not dark, will work in so many clubs/situations, and it's got a hang drum - so freaking jealous you hooked up with Manu - I thought I had an original idea for a hang drum track when I saw someone playing one in Portobello last summer but nope, Timo got there first. Kudos!

Lawrence Millar (Deeper Substance)
It sounds great Timo – deepness and a lot of vibe and energy. It feels like an album. Excellent stuff. ‘Lady Luck’ for me.

Adrian Kemp (Ninja Tune)
'The Bug' This is a killer tune man!

Gavyn Mytchel (The Gallery @ Ministry of Sound)
Its a very good mix, from start to finsh. this should do well

Harri (Sub Club)
Solid album mate, really nice production and flow, I don't have a track listing and only instantly recognize the Hang Drum track which I always liked. Few more on there I really like....but dont know the names. Many thanks for sending :-)

Paulette (Radio FG Paris)
Whilst there’s nothing I can play at club, it is a really good, polished, well produced and infinitely listenable album. There are some lovely ideas on there – like the Charleston drop especially and the vocals are very sweet. I am putting it in my ipod and will be able to give you a more detailed reaction over the next few days. Big up ya badself! Respect

Sultan
Been listening to your album all day. The more i listen to it the more i love it. Sick Solid album my man and flows real nice with a killer ending, By far my favorite track is "The Morning After" But got to admit "Deadly Grooves" is ace! Cheers! And best of luck bro, great job hands down.

Montero (Dee)
All sounds good to me! When you sending the seperate tracks?

DJ Rap
FEEL GOOD! Vet enjoyable indeed great work! Favourite tracks wonderlust and the bug, though I really liked all of it.... Reason why.... too many good tracks to mention!

James Harcourt
It was really refreshing actually. Some really cool vibes ... one track i loved, it had some jazzy swing shit going on but really drummy.

Satoshi Fumi
Nice trax mate! I love trax called ‘The Bug’ and ‘Release’. They has deep grooves. Glenn Morrison I think your artist album is very cool :) Thanks a lot for sending and great work man. Keep up the great work and speak soon.

Tom Taylor (Electric Press)
Excellent production and some great tracks on there ;-) My favorites being lady luck (lovely deep melodic) & Bug (bouncy jackin dancefloor)

Sonny Wharton
Really really like the album mate - struggling to choose a fav as they all tick the right boxes for me... 10/10 - full support :)

Kenny Substance (PureSubstance /Pure.FM) KL, Malaysia
This totally deserves a 5 out of 5 star on the accomplished album. Great flow from start to end. You dont get bored it which is the most important. Am really looking forward to each tracks on this album. Fav tracks includes Boom, The Hang Drum, Release !!!

DJ Chloé
I love 'The Hang Drum Track' and 'Lady Luck' what deep beauties! I really love how the album builds, grows in intensity and in sounds. very good flow & i love how the melodies and synths work together slightly. 'Lady Luck' is very subdued and not in your face. very pretty twinkly sounds and just a beautiful track. The whole album is great tho.

Mike Stukes (Mystic Vybes WHCR 90.3 FM)
May well be considered one of the 10 best lp's of the year.

Dave Jenkins (Editor IDJ Magazine)
It’s really strong, tells a good tale and doesn’t ever dwindle.

Dumb Dan
I'm usually not a fan of dance albums. The whole idea of listening to dance music in a home environment, unmixed and without a single girl in skimpy outfits in sight is... well just not for me. Not to mention the temptation many producers see in bringing in guest singers for every track, trying to be something they are not and quickly losing sight of the dance floor that made it all possible in the first place. Timo's album is a different story altogether - it's a journey through soundscapes that all are interesting enough to keep you listening, while that dance floor vibe still is intact. I could see myself play most of these on a club night, particularly 'The Bug' which is just as much of a stormer as Timo's by now quite famous Hang Drum Track. Wonderlust Bug is a great exception to the rule - a dance album you can actually dance to - as well as enjoy in your car, lounge or whenever!
